GOD’S “SUPER BOWL” WINNING TEAM

Winning With God's Team

GOD’S “SUPER BOWL” WINNING TEAM

Dr. George W Black

Confession: I am a victorious believer, redeemed by the Lord, washed from my sins in the blood of Jesus my Savior, saved by grace through faith, filled with the powerful Holy Spirit, poised for God’s eternal purposes, and boldly sharing the joy of God’s love, with my world.

I am a faith walking, Word talking, over-comer in this life. I am a Victor, not a victim. I can do, all things through Christ. Today, my mind is open and alert, and my heart is good soil, for the seed of God’s Word.  I will be a diligent disciple, to apply its’ truths, for from this day forward, by the miracle of spiritual growth, I will never, ever, be the same again.

Opening Scripture:

Gen 14:8-20 NLTThen the rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also called Zoar) prepared for battle in the valley of the Dead Sea. They fought against King Kedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Babylonia, and King Arioch of Ellasar—four kings against five.”

10As it happened, the valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits, while the rest escaped into the mountains. 11 The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies. 12 They also captured Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and carried off everything he owned.

13 But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.

14 When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. Then he pursued Kedorlaomer’s army until he caught up with them at Dan. 15 There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

16 Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.

17 After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High,[d] brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing:

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be God Most High,
who has defeated your enemies for you.”

Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.”

  1. Know your values. Abraham went to war because he valued his family.

“When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured…”

2 Tim 3:1-5 NLT “You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”

2 Tim 3:10 NLT “But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance.”

  1. Know your strengths. Abraham had trained his team, they were “born” into his vision.

“…he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household.”

Pro 29:18 KJV “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”

  1. Know your enemy. Abraham knew he was going against a superior force.

“There he divided his men and attacked during the night.”

Eph 6:10-12 NLT “A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[d] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

  1. Know your commitment. Abraham was committed to nothing short of victory.

“Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.”

Gal 6:9 AMP “And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.”

  1. Know who to thank. Abraham knew it was God who helped him defeat his enemies.

“And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.”

“Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.”

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

Exceeding Expectations

Opening Scripture:

Eph 3:20-21 MEV “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

  1. God is able to exceed our expectations if we are willing to trust and obey.

James 1:6-8 MEV “ But let him ask in faith, without wavering. For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed with the wind. Let not that man think that he will receive anything from the Lord.A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Have faith in God…Mk 11:22

Nothing is too hard for the Lord…Jer 32:17

  1. Don’t let anything limit your faith or what God wants to do in your life.

Ps 78:40 NKJV “How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, And grieved Him in the desert! 41 Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy”

Let go of whatever is holding you back…

Don’t allow yourself to make excuses for what you know God is saying to your heart…

Be willing to interrupt your routine for God…

  1. Rebuilding altars by answering our call to prayer is the #1 way to avoid limiting God and prepare for exceeding expectations.

1 Kings 18:30 MEV  “Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.”

  1. Solomon rebuilt not only an altar, but an entire temple for the worship of God, and God exceeded His expectations.

2 Chron 7:1-3 MEV “And when Solomon finished praying, fire came down from the heavens and consumed the burnt offering and sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. And the priests were not able to enter into the house of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house. And all the sons of Israel saw when the fire came down and the glory of the Lord came on the temple, and they bowed their faces low to the ground on the pavement, and they worshipped confessing, “The Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever.”

  1. Following the dedication of the Temple, God spoke and gave the people a plan for always having their prayers answered, their sins forgiven, and their land healed.

2 Chron 7:14 MEV “ if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.”

A. Humility – Must first humble ourselves. Too much pride.

B. Prayer – Placing our dependence on God

C. Seek His face, not his hand – Desire a personal relationship, not what He can do. Matt. 6:33

D. Turn from our wicked ways – We all have wicked ways we have grown comfortable with…what wicked ways are we willing to turn from in order to be a holy people?

E. Then God will hear, forgive, and heal – Answered prayer is always in response to faith and obedience.

F. God’s eyes open and ears attentive – Keep doing what keeps you in the King’s presence.

  1. Exceeding Expectations begins with trusting the only one who can exceed your expectations, and His name is Jesus Christ.

SAVING CHRISTMAS

Christmas Bell, Believe

Opening Scriptures:

Gal. 4:4-5 NKJV  “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”

Mat 1:23-25 NKJV  “”Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”

This year as I think about Christmas, I realize that Christmas is meant to help us reset, and refocus on what is really important. I feel like every year I need to go back and think about what the real meaning of Christmas is, and I invariably reach the same conclusion, that Christmas is about people, about relationships, about family, and about love.

These are the same things that Jesus Christ came to bring to us 2,000 years ago. He came because of His love for people, for relationships, for family, a for love.

Somehow we must open our hearts this Christmas to the seemingly magical experience of His love, and become like little children again.

We all of us, young and old, must come back to our faith in what Christmas means.

Some of us quit believing in Santa when we grew up. After all, we reasoned as adults, how in the world can this jolly big guy visit every home in the world in one night, from a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer plus Rudolph, slide down ever chimney, eat all those cookies, drink all that milk, and deliver all of those gifts to the exactly as requested.

Somewhere I have a letter I sent to Santa that my parents saved. It has my wish list, and I was quick to tell him I had been a nice little boy.

Isn’t it amazing that not only do we grow up in rational thinking and begin losing our faith in Santa, if we aren’t careful we also begin losing our faith in other mystical and supernatural beliefs, like God sending His Son as a love-gift to this world of lost humanity.

In the outstanding animated movie The Polar Express, by Tom Hanks, the story tells us of a little boy that is losing his faith in Christmas.

ThePolarExpress03F1024612201425946

A doubting boy boards a magical train on Christmas Eve, which is headed for the North Pole. Adventure after adventure befall him and a little girl who becomes his friend as they are guided along by the conductor.

As the train ascends a particularly steep hill, the threesome is climbing from the top of the engine down into the coal car. The conductor is telling them to watch for ice when the boy slips. The conductor grabs him just in time and swings him back on board, which reminds the conductor of his first trip on the Polar Express. As they make their way back in the train, they talk about what it really means to believe.

Conductor: Years ago, on my first Christmas Eve run, I was up on the roof making my rounds when I slipped on the ice myself. I reached out for a hand iron, but it broke off. I slid and fell. And yet, I did not fall off this train.

Girl: Someone saved you?

Conductor: Or something…

Girl: An angel.

Conductor: Maybe! (but said with the conviction of a Yes!)

Boy: Wait, wait! What did he look like? Did you see him?

Conductor: No sir. Sometimes seeing is believing.

And sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.

1. Saving Christmas begins by tracing the real Christmas story back a long, long time ago to its very beginning.

Christmas is is really not about Santa Claus, the North Pole, Rudolf the red nosed Reindeer, or Christmas trees, Christmas parties, Christmas gifts and etc. All of these things were added to celebrate (and sometimes commercialize) that one very holy day.

To save Christmas we must learn the real Christmas story, we have to go back a long way…

back beyond the story of Joseph and Mary and their trip to Bethlehem,

back beyond the beginning of God’s chosen people

through Abrahams faith,

back beyond the creation of man and woman in the Garden of Eden,

back to the beginning of time.

Gen 1:26-27 NLT “Then God said, “Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves. They will be masters over all life–the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the livestock, wild animals, and small animals.” {27} So God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself; male and female he created them.”

Rev 13:8 NKJV  “All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

2. In the beginning God created the first two human beings, Adam and Eve, and they walked with God until the day they broke God’s commandment. When this happened, sin entered the world, and death by sin. This separated humankind from God.

Rom 5:12 NLT  “When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.”

3. God already had a plan of redemption in place. Jesus was the plan. Someone had to pay for our sins so we would not have to.

Rom 3:23 NLT  “For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

Gal 4:4-5 NLT  “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. {5} God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.”

4. Christmas is the story of the Father sending His Son to find their lost family. We often say we found God, but God wasn’t lost. We were lost and God sent Jesus to find us.

Mat 1:23 NKJV  “”Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.””

2 Cor 5:19 NKJV  “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”

5. The story of Saving Christmas extends beyond the trip God took to earth, and includes the trip He purchased for us to go to Heaven.

Rom. 5:10-11 NLT  “We were restored to friendship with God by the death of His Son while we were still His enemies, and we will be delivered from eternal punishment by His life.  So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God – all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us…”

6. How do we imitate God’s love gift of sending Jesus to earth as our Savior?

While visiting in the Philippines, you will find in Manila a garbage dump. There are tens of thousands of people making their homes there! The residents build shacks out of what other people have thrown away. They send their children out early every morning to scavenge family meals from others’ garbage. People have been born, grown up, had their families, and finished out their lives without ever venturing outside the garbage dump.

Missionaries also live in the dump—North American Christians who’ve chosen to go there to communicate the love of Jesus Christ to people who otherwise would never hear of or receive it. I’m amazed that people would leave what we have in America to go live in a garbage dump. Would you think of doing this?

But even more amazing is the fact that our Creator did.  The Son of God made that journey from heaven to earth, and He knew what He was doing. He knew where He was going. He knew what the sacrifice would be. He journeyed from heaven to earth on a mission to save the human race.

 Another Story:

Daniel was born with a degenerative heart condition. It remained in remission during his childhood. He lived a normal kid’s life filled with friends, baseball, and drama. But in his junior year of high school, he had massive heart failure. By late 1980, he had spent several months at Stanford Medical Center, waiting for a heart transplant. On December 22 the doctors sent Daniel home for Christmas, expecting him to die before they could find a heart for him. But he was immediately rushed back to the hospital because they had a heart donor, and at age 17, Daniel had a successful heart-transplant operation.

On Christmas day, his mom read Luke 2 to Daniel while he was in recovery. Then she tackled the get-well cards from people all over the country. In a card from the Midwest, she read the following:

Dear Daniel,

Even though we do not know you, my husband and I feel so close to you and your family. Our only son, Lloyd, was your heart donor. Knowing that you have his heart has made our loss so much easier to bear.

With all our love, Paul and Barbara Chambers

“I couldn’t fight the tears any longer,” Daniel wrote later. “And suddenly I knew more clearly than ever the real reason why I should be celebrating Christmas. In dying, the Chambers’s only son had given me life. In dying, God’s only Son had given life, eternal life. Now I felt like shouting out loud my thanks that Jesus Christ was born!”

VIDEO – Polar Express, closing scene

7. Christmas doesn’t need saving. It is we who need to be saved, which is exactly why Jesus came to earth on Christmas day as God’s Christmas gift of love.

Saving Christmas isn’t about the holiday, it’s about you trusting Him again, believing Him again, and hearing as it were, the bell ring again.

Christmas Bell, Believe2

Jn 3:16-17 NKJV “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

PLEASING GOD, Pt 2

Facebook Notes – Your real-time comments on each point appreciated. www.facebook.com/GoRejoiceChurch

Opening Scripture:  Hebrews 11:5-6 NLT

“It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

1. BEGINNINGS. We all begin the Christian life with the desire to please God. This is always the instinct of a child with its parent.

2 Cor 5:17 NLT “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

Matt 3:17 NKJV “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

2. FAITH. To continue in a life that pleases God we must learn the ways of faith.

Heb 11:1 NLT “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”

3. OBEDIENCE. Abraham pleased God through action. His faith went beyond mental belief to an actionable belief. He obeyed God with action.

Heb 11:8 NLT “It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.

4. TRUST. In order to live a life of faith, we must choose to trust God more than we trust anything or anyone.

Heb 11:7 NLT “It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood.”

Heb 11:17 NLT “It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him.

Heb 11:29 NLT “It was by faith that the people of Israel went right through the Red Sea as though they were on dry ground.

Heb 11:30 NLT “It was by faith that the people of Israel marched around Jericho for seven days, and the walls came crashing down.”

Heb 11:33-34 “By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions,34 quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.

5. DECISION. At some point we must stop giving God our excuses and start giving Him our faith. Faith is a decision. So is unbelief.

Jn 20:24-29 NLT “Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” “So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

6. If you are ready for your life to be fully pleasing to God again, understand that Christ by His Spirit will do the work in your heart, but you must give Him permission.

Heb 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

someassembly

Opening Scripture:

Heb 10:24-26 NKJV “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

as·sem·ble – (of people)  to gather together in one place for a common purpose.

“a crowd had assembled outside the gates”

synonyms: gathercollect, get together, congregateconvenemeetmusterrally

Also to fit together the separate component parts of (a machine or other object).

“a factory that assembled parts for trucks”

synonyms: constructbuildfabricatemanufactureerect, set up, put together, piece together, connect, join

  1. Every parent remembers a night before Christmas when “Some Assembly Was Required” because some things just don’t go together by themselves.

Bike parts need assembling

You never have to tell yourself to breath, or tell your heart to beat…these types of things are automatic. But not everything is automatic. God sometimes gives us the parts, and then asks us to do something with them. This is called partnership. God gives you the parts, but then some assembly on your part is required.

  1. When the Bible talks about “assembling ourselves together”, it is not just talking about GOING to church, it’s also talking about BEING the church.

1 Cor 12:12 NLT “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.”

1 Cor 12:14-27 NLT “Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?

18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care.

So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”

  1. BEING the Body of Christ is not about everyone doing everything – but everyone doing THEIR thing…that which Christ has called, gifted, and anointed you to do.

Eph 4:16 NLT “ He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

  1. Are you doing what Christ has called, gifted, and anointed you to do? Remember, some assembly is required. Here are some steps to assembly:

A. Read the instructions. Study to show yourself approved unto God.

B. Follow the instructions. Be a doer, not a hearer only. Put God’s Word first in your life.

C. Adjust your schedule according to the instructions. Set priorities. Seek first the Kingdom of God.

Priorities are not what we wish they were, they are what we actually do. We must be intentional about shifting things around to include what is truly important. Adding new things always means subtracting old things. Make the most of the opportunities your church makes available for assembly.

If you can’t go on Sunday, don’t stay home on a “Tuesday” night or any day or night when you can assemble. Take advantage of the opportunities your church offers you. Show up to grow up.

D. Don’t live under condemnation. Repent and receive forgiveness when you fail. Then ask a trusted friend to help you try again.

E. If you have never asked Jesus Christ to be the Lord of your life, then this is the first step. John 3:16
